I. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND
This article presents an analytical description and interpretation of tenancy in Palanpur, a village situated in Uttar Pradesh (North India). We shall not attempt to construct this interpretation on the basis of a particular theoretical model of tenancy, although we shall examine the evidence in the light of earlier theoretical contributions and also explore some of the implications of our findings for theory. The emphasis is on the role of empirical investigation in orienting economic analysis rather than the other way round.
