Rhyme, the icons of sound, and the Middle English 'Pearl.'(Rhetoric and Poetics)

From: Style | Date: June 22, 1996| Author: | Copyright information

Sound has a separate semiotic system independent of the verbal value of words. This iconic system is discernible in poetry, where sound and sound patterns are integral part of the content. The etymology and complex rhyming pattern of the Middle English poem, 'Pearl,' can clearly demonstrates this. The word chosen contributed to the poem's ordered sound and the poet sourced several languages, mainly English, French and Old Norse, to attain this particular sound pattern. This, in turn, provides the poem's affective content which is separate from the symbolic meaning of the words.
