LONG before Ian Fleming came into the scene with his James Bond series, John le Carre' was already a widely acclaimed author of spy-thrilling books in Great Britain in 1961.
The marked difference between the two Englishmen-novelists was that Fleming's James Bond was a fictional character, while Le Carre's George Smiley portrayed a real intelligence officer.
Many Filipinos are familiar with Le Carre's third book, The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, written in 1963. This was made into a movie in the same year and was a top-grosser in Manila for over a month.
