The digital standard for high-definition television (HDTV) equipment agreed upon by computer makers and the Grand Alliance standards group is not likely to please users. The standard represents a compromise between computer makers and manufacturers of television equipment, and calls for 18 different video formats. Among these formats are traditional interlaced or alternate fields and nonsquare pixels, which can present particular difficulties for flat-screen displays. Perhaps worst of all, the frame rate is set at 60MHz, a refresh rate that produce flickering images of mediocre quality. ...
