Democracy and U.S. policy in the Muslim Middle East.(Islam and Democratization)

Government officials should make fewer public statements about democracy in the Middle East while working harder to assist participatory politics in that region. Most of the Muslim Middle East's incumbent regimes have few conflicts with American interests, and vigorously encouraging US values would probably weaken those regimes. US policy in Muslim countries should include supporting free expression, permitting Islamic activists to meet with US politicians, and seriously studying significant Muslim social groups. These proposals could be tested in Bahrain.
