Lasting peace and cooperation in the Middle East will not be achieved if peace negotiations between Israel and Arab countries focus solely on the normalization of relations between these countries. The region's long-term stability depends on the resolution of a number of fundamental issues. These include the status of east Jerusalem, and the economic and political conditions of Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine.
