Mermithid nematode (Nematoda: Mermithidae) infections have been documented globally in larval (Ezenwa 1974) and adult (Davies 1989) black fly (Diptera: Simuliidae) populations (Strickland 1911; Crosskey 1990). In flowing water ecosystems mermithid and simuliid eggs eclose at roughly the same time (Ebsary and Bennett 1973) and mermithids infect first- or second-instar simuliid larvae almost immediately (Colbo and Porter 1980) by penetrating the cuticle and entering the simuliid haemocoel (Molloy and Jamnback 1975).
