Duane Michal's series, 'Things are Queer,' can serve quite well as trope for viewing art. The queerness or strangeness is not in the object itself, but is a construct that the viewer projects unto what is viewed. With this as a starting point, one can begin to examine how and where has such construct been formed. It therefore asks the viewer to re-evaluate the traditional way of viewing and critiquing art, a tradition which has consistently suppressed representations of sexuality and sexual orientations.
