Why didn't Westropp's 'Mesolithic' catch on in 1872?

The term 'Mesolithic' was first introduced by Hodder M. Westropp in 1872 in his book 'Pre-historic phases; or, Introductory essays on pre-historic archaeology.' However, the term gained widespread acceptance much later in the 1930s, making it the last major period name to come into general use. The reason for the delay is simple. Westropp's book and his Mesolithic concept were overshadowed by the publication in the same year of famed archeologist John Evans' book, 'The ancient stone implements, weapons, and ornaments of Great Britain.'
