There are two conflicting schools of thought that offer historical account of the structure in modern cultural patterns. Reticulation models focus on ongoing interaction between contemporary communities, while phylogenic models examine the divergence of populations from common origins. The roles of reticulation and phylogeny in the creation of cultural and linguistic patterns of variation is analyzed to counter the growing practice in the fields of archeology and anthropology of viewing reticulate models as the only representations of cultural reality.
