The cigar industry in the United Kingdom (UK) has been affected by an annual decline in usage of 4% due to health concerns and high prices caused by increasing tax levies. Michael Herkemij, Manager for Henri Wintermans, which has 86% of imported cigar business, has overseen the reintroduction of a high quality cigar in 1995 and the introduction a new small cigar in 1996. Herkemij expects that cigar smoking in the UK will increase during 1997 to match improvements which have already occurred in Europe and the US.
