The launching of the euro, European Union's single currency, on January 1, 1999 is expected to affect the economic policies of both member and non-member economies in the region. Countries who are planning to join the monetary union have drastically reduced their spending to comply with the budget deficit requirements. Switzerland, a non-EU country, plans to peg its currency to the euro.
