Radiologic technologists are in a unique position to identify injuries suggestive of child abuse. Certain types of fractures, especially in children under 2 years, are indicative of violence, including fractures of the long bones and multiple rib fractures. Head injuries and injuries to vital organs are leading causes of child abuse-related deaths, and may not be readily apparent without computed tomographic or magnetic resonance imaging. Behavior of patients or family members may also lead technologists to suspect child abuse. Reporting of such suspicions is required by law.
