JOHANNESBURG, South Africa _ During an interrogation in 1977, a security officer slapped Steve Biko, South Africa's young apostle of black pride.

Biko slapped him back. That's the way Biko lived, and it probably is the reason he died a gruesome death at the age of 30.

His Black Consciousness Movement instilled self-esteem in a new generation during the depths of apartheid, activating a determination by young black South Africans to take power in their country even if it cost some of them their lives.
