The industrialization of hog production is the latest phase of a structural change similar to what most components of the country's agricultural industry go through. This industrialization is marked by the growing presence of highly integrated giant pork producers that dominate a significant portion of the business. Hog production in the Midwestern states is expected to continue on a downward trend because of certain divisive issues resulting from such large-scale operations.
