The AFL-CIO spent almost $40 million before the Nov 1996 election supporting candidates who want to increase the power of government. This political activity is at odds with the nonpartisan philosophy of revered labor leader Samuel Gompers, who, except for a one-year hiatus, headed the American Federation of Labor from its 1886 founding until his death in 1924. Gompers believed that government regulation of industrial relations was probably harmful to organized labor. He felt workers should be responsible for themselves.
