Music fans and world leaders were stunned by the recent death of South African singer and activist Miriam Makeba.

Known worldwide as "Mama Africa," Makeba died of a heart attack after collapsing on stage at the end of a concert in Italy. She was 76.

She was the first Black South African musician to win international fame. She used her celebrity status as a champion against apartheid in South Africa.
