MODESTO _ For most Bay Area residents, the Central Valley is still a world apart, ``the other California,'' as writer Gerald Haslam puts it.
In many ways, the site of recent deluges and much national attention remains both physically and psychologically remote. The names of flooded towns intoned on the nightly news _ Olivehurst, Manteca, even Modesto _ mean little to many people beyond mere pit stops on the way to Tahoe and Yosemite.
