The Lower East Side Tenement Museum in Manhattan, NY, was established to preserve the history of urban working class immigrants during the 19th century. The museum houses several artifacts that depict 19th-century tenement life.

In New York City, a museum housed in a late-19th-century tenement honors America's city settlers.

In 1863, Lucas Glockner, a German immigrant and tailor, built a row house at 97 Orchard St. in New York City. Its purpose, like that of all tenement houses, was to pack in as many rent-paying immigrants as possible.
