The organic wastes from the food consumed in cities are usually thrown away and sent to accumulate in landfills where they rot instead of being applied for food production. This results in the gradual loss of nutrients in the areas where food is produced and the contamination of the areas where wastes are stored. This can be prevented by urban farming. Food production in the cities offers the advantages of organic waste recycling and of reducing transportation requirements for waste removal.
