Two black Californians, Benjamin T. Jealous of Columbia University, and Kweli E. Washington of Harvard University, are 1997 Rhodes scholarship winners. Jealous will spend his two years at the Univ. of Oxford studying politics, and Washington will concentrate on development studies.

Benjamin T. Jealous of Pacific Grove, CA, and Kweli Ebon Washington of Berkeley, CA, are the two Blacks among the 32 American Rhodes Scholars recently named from about a thousand applicants.
