The Penguins and Flyers have become solid Stanley Cup contenders because they have both added players to give them much needed depth, so they do not have too rely so much on just a few players. Some other teams that may be Cup contenders as the 1996-97 season reaches its midpoint are examined.
The Penguins were rolling along with the best record in the Eastern Conference late last February. All of the experts marveled at Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and Ron Francis ranking 1-2-3 on the scoring charts and predicted that the Penguins would be tough to beat in the playoffs.
