The Holy Office of the papacy in Rome, Italy, issued a condemnation of the excesses of slavery on Mar 20, 1686, but unfortunately the condemnation was largely ignored and slavery continued unabated. Attempts by African Christians in Kongo to influence church policy on slavery are described.
