'Sanctuary,' sexual difference, and the problem of rape.

Rape is a significant expression of male power over women in William Faulkner's 'Sanctuary.' Feminist criticism seeks to explore the novel's portrayal of rape as a rite of passage, showing how the novel questions the reduction of women as sexual slaves and men as violent brutes. Temple Drake, the main character, attempts to challenge the view of men as truthful and women as hypocrites, but she simply moves from one position of sexual oppression to another.

To simply learn the word 'rape' is to take instruction in the

power relationship between males and females.
