New techniques in measuring thin-film properties are presented. A piezoelectric-actuated microtensile test machine does not have the problems associated with conventional microscale test devices. Another metrology tool is scanning force microscopy.

The surface characterization of materials includes more than just identifying what they're made of. It also includes measurement of their physical properties.
