Couple communication patterns of maritally aggressive and nonaggressive male alcoholics.

Marital aggression by male alcoholics towards their wives is associated with problems in couple communication. Researchers interviewed newly abstinent male alcoholics and their wives and divided couples into aggressive male and non-aggressive male groups. Aversive-defensive communication was significantly higher in couples with an aggressive male, but there was no difference in facilitative-enhancing behavior between groups, although the men scored lower than their wives. Aggressive men were more to react negatively to their spouses' negative behavior.
