The Essentials of Shinto describes itself as "primarily a work of reference." But given the dearth of serious English-language studies of Shinto, Picken's book has to serve also as its own introduction, though the author does recommend his earlier title, Shinto: Japan's Spiritual Roots (Kodansha International, 1980). In fact, in the introductory and final material, the book spends a great deal of time just arguing for giving Shinto serious consideration as a religion.
