Mencius uses the term 'hsing' to refer to tendencies that characterize things of a kind, but 'hsing' differs from essence in that the 'hsing' can vary among things of the same kind. However, when he uses 'jen-hsing' for the characteristic tendencies of human beings, Mencius refers to predispositions that are shared by all human beings. Mencius holds that human beings have in common certain emotional predispositions that make them capable of cultural accomplishments.
