Saints and fanatics: the problematic connection between religion and spirituality.

Religion may not always encourage the development of spirituality as evidenced by fanatic tendencies among religious devotees. Fanaticism, which is idolatry, allows the use of prohibited means in pursuing religious ends. It also drives groups to nurture hatred, an emotion contrary to spirituality, against those who oppose their beliefs. To prevent fanatic tendencies, religion must be regulated and must be open to criticism.
