An overabundance of novels published during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods in the UK featured anarchist characters. Most of such works depict anarchists as extremely dangerous villains with diabolical plans. The anarchist, who is almost always part of a conspiracy against civilized society, represents the typical notion of evil at work. Fiction has portrayed anarchists as violent characters because printed materials have emphasized the destructive and violent nature of anarchist theory and action.
