We now want to shine a light on substance abuse. Alcohol and drugs are major social problems in the United States. According to the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (Making the Link, 1995), alcohol and drug abuse contribute to more than half of all violent deaths (accidental, suicide, or homicide). This same source indicates that alcohol and drugs play a significant role in crimes within the family and can be traced to approximately 64% of spousal abuse, child abuse, and sexual abuse of children.
