The Hartlib circle was an example of new kinds of intellectual contacts which took place in the mid-17th century between Eastern Europe and England. Such contacts were spawned by the scientific revolution and the Reformation. Members of the circle shared the view that scientific knowledge and educational progress could contribute to human advancement. Of German, English, and Polish descent, Hartlib understood how communication among the scholars of different nations could contribute to the advancement of science.
