For a brief period after the First World War, the German banker and politician Walther Rathenau was one of the world's foremost thinkers on business and society. He invented the concept of the "separation of ownership and control", which became one of the cornerstones of managerial capitalism. Peter Drucker identified Rathenau as one of the three most important influences on his own ideas, along with FW Taylor and the French industrialist and writer Henri Fayol.
