The First Amendment comes of age: the emergence of free speech in twentieth-century America.

The continual expansion of freedom speech rights and the special status granted the First Amendment has led some scholars to call for a narrowing of speech rights that provide maximum protections only for speech consistent with the promotion of public discourse. The development of a modernist consciousness in the US can be seen as a precondition to expanded free speech, but the rise of absolute free speech resulted in its separation from democratic ideals. The paradox now inherent in free speech is that when all speech is allowed speech is no longer special.
