Recent interest in rehabilitation of criminals ignores or explicitly rejects the important contributions religious faith and conversion offer. The 19th-century social and ethical assumptions and the concepts underlying programs of treatment seem revived today with little awareness shown of the flaws that doomed past efforts. Religious conversion goes to the heart of the crucial moral question: Why be moral and just in an unjust universe? Religion has shown itself superior to other available means in altering human conduct.
