"A more culpable passion": 'Pamela,' 'Joseph Andrews,' and the history of desire.

Samuel Richardson's 'Pamela' and Henry Fielding's 'Joseph Andrews' demonstrate how the eighteenth-century novel began the process of distinguishing between economic and sexual desire. Characters in 'Pamela' are able to articulate desire by learning the difference between mutual affection in marriage and lust. Fielding suggests in 'Joseph Andrews' that, although the intellect may attempt to control passions through understanding, humans can never be certain they know precisely what they want.
