ON August 31, 1954, a special Senate committee considered a resolution to censure Senator Joseph McCarthy for allegedly unethical behavior toward the United States Senate. Among the charges against McCarthy was contempt of the Senate or a senatorial committee. On December 2, 1954, the Senate approved a "Resolution of Censure." It stated: "[McCarthy] acted contrary to senatorial ethics and tended to bring the Senate into dishonor and disrepute, to obstruct the constitutional processes of the Senate, and to impair its dignity."
