It was a tight race during a time of national crisis. It matched an unknown, upstart senator from Illinois and an experienced, nationally recognized New York senator.
The New York senator had a strong hold on Pennsylvania and much of New England, but was a polarizing figure. The Illinois senator surprisingly won the party's nomination and, eventually, the presidency. One of his first moves as president-elect was to appoint the one-time rival to be secretary of state.
