A spoon bow and counter stern don't always make a sailboat look like a work of art, but in the case of the Alden 59, these two old-timey elements work magic. They draw out the LOA to give the 59 a beam/LOA ratio of about four. Remove the overhangs and you end up with a modern-looking and somewhat stubby boat, which is not what the client wanted. Although she's beautiful, this design has some compromises that are worth exploring.
