* W. C. Handy, composer and "Father of the Blues" was born on this day in Florence, AL. His given name was William Christopher Handy. He was the first to put the essence of jazz and blues down on paper. His most famous compositions are Memphis Blues and St. Louis Blues. In 1917 Handy took a band to New York to record his compositions. In 1918 he teamed up with Harry Pace to form a music publishing company. Handy went blind in the early 1920s. From...
