William Morris was an interior designer and co-founder of the firm Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (MMF) in 1861. He was the only partner with the business experience and he served as the connection between MMF's designers and its craftsmen. He was an able manager and made a decision to diversify into the upper-middle class market. He focused on a distinctive look for the firm. In 1868, he started selling printed fabrics.

Contrary to received wisdom. Morris was a shrewd manager who ran his firm in a way that designers at the end of the 20th century can recognize and applaud.
