Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis has achieved another political victory with his selection as party leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok). This triumph comes after he was named as the party's chosen successor to the ailing Greek leader Andreas Papandreou in the spring of 1996 and Pasok's domination of the recent parliamentary elections. The challenges now facing Simitis include foreign relations and meeting the criteria for European monetary union.
