Spencer Fullerton Baird, who lived from 1823 to 1887, was a student of natural history who became secretary of the US Fish and Fisheries Commission in 1871 and secretary of the Smithsonian Institution in 1878. He also was a professor at Dickinson College, the school from which he graduated at age 17. Baird wrote, translated and edited several scientific books and articles. He also described dozens of new species of mammals and other creatures.
