ABSTRACT - Charles Henry Gilbert (1859-1928) was a pioneering ichthyologist who made major contributions to the study of fishes of the American West. As chairman of the Department of Zoology at Leland Stanford Junior University in Palo Alto, Calif , during 1891-1925, Gilbert was extremely devoted to his work and showed little patience with those of a different mindset.
