Zebras are being outmuscled in Oneida Lake.
Biologists have confirmed that the quagga mussel, larger than the well-established zebra mussel, has found a home in Oneida Lake. Both are invasive, or nonnative, species.
It's not a surprise. The quagga has been in nearby lakes for years, and it was only a matter of time before it appeared in Oneida Lake. The mussels were found in routine samples taken this fall by Cornell University researchers.
