The importance of London in music history has been a direct outcome of its political and economic position. In the nineteenth century it was by far the largest and wealthiest city in the world, as well as the capital of an empire and the dominant force in world trade. It is not surprising that it was a place of dynamic change and vigorous activity in music, as in almost every field of human activity, even though the main creative forces in European music were to be found elsewhere.
