J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Fellowship of the Ring' dwelt on the transcendent heroism of Gandalf who sacrificed himself into the fate of Moria. Although some see Gandalf's decision as foolish, it was comparable with those made by the early Christians in the New Testament who freely chose to self- sacrifice. His self-sacrificial death, like those endorsed by the Bible, is also due to his obedience to the higher good. His decision to die for his friends and the good of all Middle Earth proves true the Christian precept that no greater love exists than when a man offers his life for a friend.
