Walt Disney Co. intended the film 'Pocahontas' to post record earnings as well as address public outcry concerning the portrayal of minorities in its other films. Directors Mike Gabriel and Eric Goldberg downplayed issues of racism, colonialism, alienation and environmentalism by focusing on the romance between main characters Pocahontas and John Smith. 'Pocahontas' also succeeded in enhancing public interest in Native Americans as evidenced in the increase of tourists in Indian settlements.<...
