Emerging or re-emerging infectious diseases are presently the world's leading cause of death and, consequently, represent a pressing area of concern for environmental and public health professionals. However, a number of issues will have to be addressed first before the environmental and public health profession can effectively address the problem presented by emerging infectious diseases. These issues include identifying the needed human resources, equipment and facilities, and providing adequate training for environmental and public health professionals.
