Cases of influenza virus types A(H1N1) and A(H3N2) were reported in different areas of the world between Mar 1996 and Aug 1996. The A(H3N2) virus was predominantly reported from European countries, China and some regions of the US. The A(H1N1) virus is much more common and was widespread in Japan, Canada and much of the US. Preventive measures to reduce the number of influenza cases include vaccination and the use of antiviral drugs if diagnosis is confirmed soon enough.
